Beaufort’s Historic District
With its narrow roads alongside the Beaufort River banks, shielded by centuries-old live oaks and fronting antebellum homes carefully restored over time, Beaufort’s jewelbox National Historic Landmark District is the centerpiece of this distinctly Southern town.
To live in the Historic District is to step back in time. Horse-drawn carriages carry tourists past the homes, and when the fog is thick and the Spanish moss hangs low, you can almost believe you are living in the early 1800s. It’s that peaceful – and that historically preserved. That makes home-buying in the Historic District an investment in more than real estate: It’s an investment in history.
Beaufort is the second oldest town in South Carolina, originally established in 1711. The 304-acre area comprising the original town was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. Beaufort’s important historic and architectural character from 1710 to 1861 was further recognized when the district was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. The Beaufort Historic District is significant for both its history and architecture. It is significant as a center of antebellum plantation culture in South Carolina and for its role during the Civil War, and in African-American history during and after the war.
In the Historic District you’ll find homes built from the late 1700s in a variety of architectural styles, including English Colonial, Federal, Classical Revival, Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Gothic Revival, Colonial Revival, Neoclassical, Craftsmen, Art Deco, and Art Moderne. Quite a bit to choose from, isn’t it? That’s part of what makes Beaufort’s National Historic District so special.
Just as important as the Corinthian columns on front verandahs are the people who make their homes in the Historic District. Bonded by an appreciation for history and a determination to protect and preserve their piece of it, these residents are an eclectic mix of “been heres” and “come heres,” each adding to the rich tapestry that is Beaufort’s National Landmark Historic District.
Homes in the Historic District cover a wide range of price determined largely by the home’s pedigree, condition and location. Many homes have been painstakingly renovated over the past 20 years and include updated electric systems, HVAC and insulation. Others remain a work in progress and there are some still in need of major TLC. Exterior changes to homes in the Historic District must be reviewed and approved by the City as part of the overall effort to preserve the District’s integrity.
Within walking distance of Historic District homes are dozens of restaurants, the city’s Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park and pavilion, quaint shops along Bay Street and adjoining downtown streets and alleys, and 300 years of Lowcountry history.
Schools: Children living in the Historic District are zoned to attend Beaufort Elementary, Beaufort Middle School and Beaufort High. Nearby private school options include Beaufort Academy, located just four miles away, and St. Peter Catholic School, located two miles away on Lady’s Island.
Shopping: Grocery stores, pharmacies and an assortment of retail shops are within easy walking distance of Historic District homes – or worst case, just a few minutes’ drive away. Savannah is about 50 minutes away by car and Charleston just slightly further; Atlanta is a five-hour drive, as is Charlotte, NC. Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport provides air service.
Beaches: Hunting Island State Park on the Atlantic Ocean, about 20 minutes from homes in the Historic District, features four miles of sandy shore, a lighthouse to climb, trails to run and a scenic lagoon, perfect for fishing or launching a kayak. For boaters – or people who have friends with a boat – there are hundreds of islands, hummocks and sandbars within minutes of downtown. |
