Hunting Island State Park
Hunting Island State Park
This popular park near Historic Beaufort is a large secluded barrier island that hosts an abundance of wildlife, as well as native plants and flowers. Hunting Island got its name when the island was once used by the locals for hunting deer, waterfowl and raccoon.
Dating from the 1870s, the Hunting Island Lighthouse, South Carolina’s only publicly accessible historic lighthouse, is an incredible 132.5 feet high and provides spectacular views of the ocean and marshlands.
The Hunting Island lagoon is home to hundreds of birds and is a great spot for crabbing or shrimping. Stroll the Marsh Walk boardwalk which extends into the marsh tidal flats and view egrets, blue heron, or spot some fiddler crabs. Hike or bike the several trails that take you through the maritime forest and lagoon areas.
Pick your fishing spot - enjoy some time fishing in the lagoon for whiting, trout, spots, or bass, from the Pier which stretches 1120 feet into the Fripp Inlet, or surf fishing on the beach.
Hunting Island is also a popular nesting ground for the endangered Loggerhead turtle and the park maintains a hatchery for the study and preservation of the species.
